LG unveils world’s slimmest LE9500 LED LCD HDTV

by admin on Jan.09, 2010, under News, Science

LG is on a quest this year to become the manufacturer to achieve “world’s first” in the area of thin LED form factor, and we are inclined to say without hesitation that the company has definitely achieved this goal. This year, the company’s presence at the International CES is probably one of the biggest at the Central Hall exhibit, covering a floor space of roughly 6000 square feet at the main entrance where crowds are overwhelmed with LED-backlit LCD HDTVs in every direction.

This year, the company revealed a strong focus on LED backlighting with six new series of LED models in its brand new INFINIA series.  However, its most prided accomplishment this year comes in the form of an Ultra Slim LED LCD HDTV known as the LG Infinia LE9500. The HDTV display measures in at 47-inches diagonally and officially expresses the world’s slimmest LCD form factor with a depth of just 6.9 millimeters. The new model only has a 10mm bezel and looks absolutely stunning in person. In addition, the entire panel employs direct LED backlighting with 240 dimmable zones rather than an edge-based implementation.

There is no question as to why this LED-backlit LCD HDTV in the Infinia series won the CES 2010 “Best of Innovations” Award. We should also note that the LE9500 and LE8500 are the world’s first THX Certified liquid crystal displays to receive THX Bright Room Mode. The goal of THX Bright Room Mode is to closely reproduce the HD Color Standard and other video parameters used by filmmakers in dark mastering studios, with careful adjustments made for brighter environments.

“Because all rooms are unique in regards to lighting, the amount and type of light in the home theater can have a dramatic impact on how you perceive color and detail,” said John Dahl, director of education at THX. “THX Bright Room will provide home theater enthusiasts a playback setting that allows them to experience the rich details and vividness of their favorite movies when the lights are turned on and the window shades open.”

Pricing and availability of these new Ultra Slim LED displays is yet to be announced, but we expect them to be available before the second half of the year. We decided to take a few pictures of LG’s LED LCD HDTV display center for our readers to get a good look at just how big this booth is. Stay tuned for more updates.

Microsoft Reveals Natal for Holiday 2010, Game Room Service

by admin on Jan.07, 2010, under News, Science

At the premiere keynote at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and Entertainment & Devices President Robbie Bach revealed Micrsoft’s biggest products of 2010. While the company focused on a wide array of products, including Windows 7 PCs and its Media Room software, there were many game-related announcements too, including a new service for Xbox 360 called Game Room, as well as a Project Natal release window announcement.

Bach debuted the Game Room, an retro gaming service that will allow you to partake in old-school games against friends on both your Xbox 360 and Windows PCs. Launching with roughly 30 games later in the year (including Centipede, Combat, and Astromash) and promising via press release “over 1000 games being released throughout the next three years,” Game Room will allow you to invite other Live users to check out your virtual arcade room and its collection of titles. According to Bach’s address, the service will debut in the Spring, and purchases will allow gamers to play on both the Xbox 360 and the PC. No word yet on what other major differences this service will offer from Xbox Live Arcade. You can see the debut trailer above.

Later in the show, a video featuring Microsoft employees–both Xbox and non-Xbox–touting the interface capabilities of Project Natal was followed by an announcement that Natal will be coming to the Xbox 360 this holiday season. Bach closed the keynote by claiming that 2010 will be the Xbox’s biggest year yet.

Asus shows its Waveface concept

by admin on Jan.07, 2010, under News, Science

Asus has decided to present a new concept at CES 2010 show under the Waveface brand, and it consists out of three distinctive devices, one for each specific usage.

Before we start rambling about each of the devices, bear in mind that this is still a concept and it’s very unlikely that we’ll see this any time soon, but it’s nice too see in which direction is Asus going, and it does look impressive and quite interesting.

The “Waveface system” concept features a wrist-mounted smartphone-like device called Waveface Ultra, a lightweight portable touchscreen tablet, Waveface Light and Waveface Casa, a living room HDTV. These three devices will be somehow synchronized so you can use whichever device that you find the most convenient at that time. In any case, the video demo does certainly look impressive.

Asus predicts that Waveface will show up in the next five years and we certainly hope that it will look at least close to the demo, but five years is a long period for a concept and we are quite sure that a lot of things will be changed.

Here are couple of pictures while the demo can be found here.

Toshiba launches the ZX900 Cell TV in the US

by admin on Jan.07, 2010, under News, Science

If there ever was a TV that you would buy and brag about it – then this is it. Say goodbye to your ordinary plasma, LCD or whichever puny TVs you might own as Toshiba’s CES-announced ZX900 Series Cell TV looks to change the way we perceive TV devices.

As the name suggests, it is based on the CELL Broadband Engine, which speaks volumes of performance capabilities. This LED-backlit TV comes with a set-top box and features Ethernet, 802.11n WiFi, Wireless HD and 1TB of storage.

Furthermore, its 480Hz-capable panel can be used to both view native 3D content and recreate 3D from 2D using the proprietary TriVector technology. For instance, when viewing native 3D, the 240Hz in 2D mode splits to 120Hz for each eye, whereas the TriVector technology means that you can watch pretty much anything you’d like in 3D.

Toshiba says that Cell TVs will be positioned as home media servers and the ZX900 comes in 55’’ and 65’’ versions. The pricing hasn’t yet been announced, but don’t expect it to be cheap.

Google Nexus One: How UK customers can get one

by admin on Jan.06, 2010, under Internet, News, Science

Consumers who do not want to wait for an official UK launch of Google’s new iPhone rival the Nexus One can order it, unlocked and sim-free online via google.com/phone, and pay $519 (£324) plus $29.65 (£18). Import taxes would come to approximately £60, too, so the total cost would be around £400, subject to fluctuations in the US to UK exchange rate.

Complications arise, however, should users wish to subscribe to a network, too. Vodafone is the first European carrier to be announced, but the company has confirmed that it has no exclusive deal with Google. That means that while Vodafone will be first to subsidise UK purchases, there is no guarantee that other operators may not start to do the same thing in the near future.

Google is known to have spoken to several major networks already, although no deals are said to be imminent. Vodafone hopes to start offering Nexus One contracts within weeks, and prices will be inline with those for the iPhone. Sers should expect monthly tariffs to start at around £30, and the phone will cost less than £200 on an 18-mmonth deal.

Additionally, because all phones sold will be unlocked, some customers could find it cheaper to sign up with a contract, and then buy themselves out of the deal. Again, Google says it will try to make sure that any obvious outright purchases are treated as such, but the situation could prove difficult to police. All phone are purchased from Google, but contracts will be with individual networks.

LG and Panasonic to ship Skype-equipped TVs

by admin on Jan.06, 2010, under Internet, News, Science, Software

This Tuesday, Panasonic and LG have made a deal with Skype to use its software in the latest lines of TVs coming from the aforementioned companies. Furthermore, Skype announced support for 720p video calls, something that will surely be a hit with many.

So, Panasonic’s VIERA CAST-enabled HDTV’s and LG’s total of 26 new LCD and Plasma HDTVs with NetCast Entertainment Access will be capable of “Skyping”. These products should be available sometime in the middle of 2010.

Of course, opportunities such as this one open the doors for many software and peripheral manufacturers, and some already jumped on that wagon. Furthermore, it’s worth noting that the webcams perform encoding independently from the TV.

As for the actual webcams, faceVision has developed a HD encoding webcam optimized for Skype and it should ship in February 2010 with the pricing at $99 (with microphone) and $69 (without the mic). They’re not alone though, as In Store Solutions also announced two HD encoding webcams – Freetalk HD Pro and Freetalk HD Pro Plus priced at $120 and $140 respectively. They should hit the market sometime in March 2010.

Pedal-powered submarine to go on the market

by admin on Jan.03, 2010, under News, Science

The craft can be powered by two people with no specialist training and moves at about walking pace.

The pedallers sit side by side in the craft, most of which is made from a special acrylic glass.

Its designers say this will give occupants “spectacular underwater views”.

Apart from two sets of pedals, controls are limited to a steering wheel and a few buttons to make operating the submarine as simple as possible.

The sub was developed by Russian company called Marine Innovative Technologies Ltd (MIT) and is expected to cost £50,000 pounds although prices could drop to around £15,000 for bulk buyers.

MIT expect to sell to private buyers as well as companies hiring out the subs to tourists in popular resorts.

At 11ft long and 6ft 6in wide it is possible to transport the craft on the back of a car trailer. MIT will also offer a model with a low-power electric drive unit as well.

Safety features include an automatic system to release ballast for surfacing in an emergency.

MIT, based in St Petersburg, says the vehicle boasts a high degree of manoeuvrability and can go forwards, backwards, up and down, hover and rotate about its vertical axis.

Scientists at MIT say that no one has previously built an enclosed, pedal-powered submarine for tourists because they could not generate the required power.

However, MIT has patented an innovative design – utilising a phenomenon called the Coanda effect – which enables two people to create enough thrust.

Vegetarian spider Bagheera kiplingi found in Central America

by admin on Oct.13, 2009, under News, Science

spider_1500738c

The Bagheera kiplingi – named for the kindly panther in Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book – is a jumping spider that lives in acacia trees.

Research, published in Current Biology journal, shows that B. kiplingi is almost exclusively herbivorous, only nibbling on a few ant larvae from time to time to break the monotony.

Otherwise it eats only Beltian bodies, the nutrient-rich growths on acacias usually consumed by the ants that defend the trees in a symbiotic relationship.

No other spiders are known to be anything like as vegetarian; a few others have been known to consume nectar in small quantities, but not as a staple part of their diet.

To further endear itself to arachnophobes, B. kiplingi males are the only known examples of caring fatherhood among spiders.

The males help the mothers look after their eggs and young. Both parents remain with the young after they hatch.
