Haiti earthquake: hundreds of thousands feared dead

by admin on Jan.13, 2010, under News, World

A major international relief effort was launched yesterday to hurry rescuers and suppliers to the Caribbean country as the streets of Port-au-Prince were left strewn with corpses and shattered buildings.

Little escaped the devastation wrought by the grade 7.0-magnitude quake that struck the area in the south of Haiti on Tuesday afternoon.

Hospitals and schools collapsed and were reportedly full of dead while 200 foreigners were missing from the city’s expensive Hotel Montana.

Up to 200 United Nations staff in the city were unaccounted for last night including the civilian head of mission, Hedi Annabi of Tunisia, after its headquarters was flattened.

Monsignor Serge Miot, the city’s Catholic archbishop, was a confirmed casualty, his body pulled from the rubble of his offices while his vicar general, Charles Benoit, was missing.

The presidential palace, Haiti’s grandest building, was substantially destroyed and its incumbent, Rene Preval, described the scene in his capital as “unimaginable”.

He said he had been stepping over the bodies of the dead and hearing the cries of the trapped underneath his country’s collapsed parliament building.

His prime minister, Jean-Max Bellerive, said the government believed the death toll in the city of two million people was “well over 100,000″ while Youri Latortue, a senior senator, said it could be 500,000.

Both admitted they had no way of knowing but aid workers on the scene reported widespread destruction and suffering as severely injured people lay in the streets, unable to get medical assistance.

Haiti, the poorest country by far in the western hemisphere, was already struggling to recover from a series of severe hurricanes and flooding in 2008.

The country sits on a major fault line and scientists have warned for years that it was likely to be hit by a major earthquake.

France considers tax for Google, Yahoo and Facebook

by admin on Jan.09, 2010, under Internet, News, World

A report, commissioned by the government, suggests firms such as Google, Yahoo and Facebook should pay a new tax on their online ad revenues.

The money could be used to fund legal alternatives for buying books, films and music on the internet.

But critics say the tax would be difficult to implement and Google says it could slow down innovation.

President Nicolas Sarkozy has taken a tough line on the increasing dominance of digital content.

France has just introduced tough new legislation aimed at removing those who persistently download illegal content from the net.

It has also gone head-to-head with Google over its plans to digitise the world’s books, with a project to set up its own digital library financed by the government to the tune of £700m.

And it is considering a law which would give net users the option to have old data about themselves deleted.

The proposals for a tax on content is still very much in the early stages and there are few details of how it would exactly work.

Patrick Zelnik, who contributed to the report and is also the founder of the French president’s wife’s record label, hopes the idea will be taken on board across the EU.

But Google is among those to have voiced opposition to the plan.

“We don’t think introducing an additional tax on internet advertising is the right way forward as it could slow down innovation,” said Olivier Esper, senior policy manager for Google France.

The better way to support content creation is to find new business models that help consumers find great content and rewards artists and publishers for their work.”

Brad Pitt’s beard prepares him for role?

by admin on Jan.09, 2010, under News, Show Biz

Brad Pitt’s beard is apparently helping him get into character for his next part.

According to People, Pitt will next be playing early 20th century British explorer Colonel Percy Harrison Fawcett, who disappeared in the Amazon in 1925.

However, a Paramount source maintained that the film, called The Lost City of Z, has no script or start date. Further, the explorer had a handlebar moustache and no other facial hair.

“There is no film-related explanation I can give you as to why [Pitt] has the beard,” the insider added.

Burj Dubai: base jumpers leap from world’s tallest building

by admin on Jan.09, 2010, under News, Video, Weird

Omar Al Hegelan and Nasser Al Neyadi from the Emirates Aviation Society, were given permission to do the jump on Tuesday, a day after the building was officially opened with a lavish firework display.

They jumped 672 meters or 2204 feet and travelled at a speed of 136mph before their parachutes opened. It took over one and a half minutes for the jumpers to reach the ground.

Mr Al Neyadi, who holds the world record for the first ever Mount Everest sky dive, said that the jump was “the best experience ever”.

He added: “When we were at the top of the building I was thinking ‘this is crazy’.

“I was a little nervous but I wanted to jump from the highest tower in the world to record an achievement for my family and for my country”.

The tower cost £930 million to build and was named after Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, the ruler of the neighbouring emirate of Abu Dhabi, and president of the United Arab Emirates.

He and his brothers personally intervened last month to lend Dubai £6 billion to pay off the pressing debts of one of Dubai’s biggest state-owned companies.

The Burj Khalifa measures a staggering 828 metres or 2717 feet.

Rare self-rolling giant snow balls found in UK

by admin on Jan.09, 2010, under News, Weird

Also known as snowrollers, snow bales and snow doughnuts, they form mostly in unusual conditions created by a precise combination of snow, ice, wind, temperature and moisture on the prairies of North America.

But this week’s frozen weather has allowed the snow cylinders to make a freak appearance in the UK.

Ron Trevett, 55, and his wife Aileen, 54, readers of The Daily Telegraph, were stunned when they stumbled across the mysterious formations as they walked their dogs in a field near their home in Yeovil, Somerset.

“We saw them from a distance on the ridge of the field, and we thought some kids had been playing up there and making giant snowballs,” said Mr Trevett.

“But when we got up there we saw there were no footprints and there were hundreds of them – too many for children to have done it. We realised it must have been the wind.”

Mr Trevett, a builder, said he and his wife felt privileged to have witnessed such a rare phenomenon. “We feel very lucky. I’m the wrong side of fifty and I’ve never seen anything like it in my life. We were gobsmacked to look at them there in the sunlight. It was a really impressive sight, and I took some pictures so other people could share it,” he said.

Frank Barrow, a lecturer in meteorology at the Met Office, said the rolls can only form in a precise set of unusual conditions.

“They start off with nice thick layer of snow, with the top snow just on the point of melting either because of general temperature or sunshine on the surface,” he said.

“The top snow layer becomes a bit sticky, and you then need a fairly strong wind. The sticky layer can be peeled off the colder and more powdery snow underneath by the wind forming a roll. In the first picture you can see some of the powdery stuff sticking to the lower outside surface of the roll. I suppose it is a natural version of making a snowman.”

After being formed, the rolls eventually become too large and heavy for the wind to move, or are halted by rising ground or a tuft of vegetation.

They are often hollow because the weak inner layers which form first can easily be blown away, and the fragile formations can collapse in the slightest change of temperature or gust of wind.

Liz Bentley, of the Royal Meteorological Society, said despite their rarity in the UK, there is a chance of more snow rolls appearing over the next few days.

“These rolls are unusual here because we don’t tend to have major snow events like the one we’re experiencing now. They happen with the combination of lying snow and high wind speeds, mostly in North America and Northern Europe, and they can be as small as a tennis ball or they can be as large as two feet across – depending on how strong the wind is and how smooth the surface of the snow is,” she said.

“There are quite strong winds predicted this weekend as well as more snow, so if people keep a look out they might see a few more of these appearing around the country over the next few days.”

LG unveils world’s slimmest LE9500 LED LCD HDTV

by admin on Jan.09, 2010, under News, Science

LG is on a quest this year to become the manufacturer to achieve “world’s first” in the area of thin LED form factor, and we are inclined to say without hesitation that the company has definitely achieved this goal. This year, the company’s presence at the International CES is probably one of the biggest at the Central Hall exhibit, covering a floor space of roughly 6000 square feet at the main entrance where crowds are overwhelmed with LED-backlit LCD HDTVs in every direction.

This year, the company revealed a strong focus on LED backlighting with six new series of LED models in its brand new INFINIA series.  However, its most prided accomplishment this year comes in the form of an Ultra Slim LED LCD HDTV known as the LG Infinia LE9500. The HDTV display measures in at 47-inches diagonally and officially expresses the world’s slimmest LCD form factor with a depth of just 6.9 millimeters. The new model only has a 10mm bezel and looks absolutely stunning in person. In addition, the entire panel employs direct LED backlighting with 240 dimmable zones rather than an edge-based implementation.

There is no question as to why this LED-backlit LCD HDTV in the Infinia series won the CES 2010 “Best of Innovations” Award. We should also note that the LE9500 and LE8500 are the world’s first THX Certified liquid crystal displays to receive THX Bright Room Mode. The goal of THX Bright Room Mode is to closely reproduce the HD Color Standard and other video parameters used by filmmakers in dark mastering studios, with careful adjustments made for brighter environments.

“Because all rooms are unique in regards to lighting, the amount and type of light in the home theater can have a dramatic impact on how you perceive color and detail,” said John Dahl, director of education at THX. “THX Bright Room will provide home theater enthusiasts a playback setting that allows them to experience the rich details and vividness of their favorite movies when the lights are turned on and the window shades open.”

Pricing and availability of these new Ultra Slim LED displays is yet to be announced, but we expect them to be available before the second half of the year. We decided to take a few pictures of LG’s LED LCD HDTV display center for our readers to get a good look at just how big this booth is. Stay tuned for more updates.

Microsoft Reveals Natal for Holiday 2010, Game Room Service

by admin on Jan.07, 2010, under News, Science

At the premiere keynote at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and Entertainment & Devices President Robbie Bach revealed Micrsoft’s biggest products of 2010. While the company focused on a wide array of products, including Windows 7 PCs and its Media Room software, there were many game-related announcements too, including a new service for Xbox 360 called Game Room, as well as a Project Natal release window announcement.

Bach debuted the Game Room, an retro gaming service that will allow you to partake in old-school games against friends on both your Xbox 360 and Windows PCs. Launching with roughly 30 games later in the year (including Centipede, Combat, and Astromash) and promising via press release “over 1000 games being released throughout the next three years,” Game Room will allow you to invite other Live users to check out your virtual arcade room and its collection of titles. According to Bach’s address, the service will debut in the Spring, and purchases will allow gamers to play on both the Xbox 360 and the PC. No word yet on what other major differences this service will offer from Xbox Live Arcade. You can see the debut trailer above.

Later in the show, a video featuring Microsoft employees–both Xbox and non-Xbox–touting the interface capabilities of Project Natal was followed by an announcement that Natal will be coming to the Xbox 360 this holiday season. Bach closed the keynote by claiming that 2010 will be the Xbox’s biggest year yet.
